The joy of retirement

You just spent 30 years making reports, fielding phone calls, filing papers, and pacifying your boss at the office. At the end of each day, you find your energy gradually waning as you reach that point wherein you wanted to declare the last part of your work — retirement.

Retirement is when an individual feels like withdrawing from their occupation to find some time for their selves and contemplate on how much he or she has earned or saved.

Everybody needs a time to stop working, reflect back upon the past, and enjoy whatever life has to offer with the individual’s retirement plan or pension staying close behind.

However, the problem of retirement using the typical pensions plans like that of the Social Security; people should start relying on their own savings than the usual way of planning for retirement. This is because the Social Security is gradually losing more assets than it should be gaining in order to adequately supply the much-needed funds of their members.

In fact, the agency asserts that they are paying more than what they collect and they fear that by the year 2010, 76 million people are estimated to reach their retirement age. They estimated that by that time, with all the assets being utilized at exceptional rate, they might only be paying 72% of the expected retirement compensation of the members.

This goes to show that people should try to rely more on their personal savings and other sources of their retirement plans. This will bring about a more balanced view of all the aspects as far as retirement is concerned.

So what are the alternatives to Social Security? Here is a list of the other retirement schemes that you can start planning by now so that by the time you reach your retirement age, you will not solely rely upon your social security retirement benefits.

1. Annuities

These are highly adaptable insurance contracts intended to provide earnings and help you reach financial stability even after you have reached your retirement age.

2. Investments

Saving money is just the beginning. You have to choose ventures that will provide you with greater money over the long period.

Try to look for the “lifestyle mutual fund,” which puts a portion of your money in diversified stocks and the other portion in bonds, and maintains a solid balance between the two.

Another good choice is the target retirement fund. Its portfolio becomes more conservative as you approach retirement age.

3. 401 (k)

Your employer’s 401 (k) or 403 (b0 can be great sources of retirement benefits. Here, the company will deduct a portion of your income and invest the amount on mutual funds, usually on your chosen instrument.

4. Emergency account

Try to move your money automatically each month from your checking account into an account earmarked for unexpected expenses. Aim for a sum that will cover three month’s worth of basics (mortgage, food, utilities, car payments, etc.)

Once you have built this nest egg, you would not have to withdraw from long-term savings if a crisis hits.

There is no secret to building wealth after retirement. You only need to live less than you make and invest the surplus well. When you save money and invest automatically, your retirement would definitely be the best phase in your life where you enjoy relaxation with no financial obligations to worry about.

History of perfume

What is Perfume?

People have been using perfumes for pretty much all of recorded history. While hygiene standards have varied over the centuries (Queen Isabella of Spain, the 1400s, boasts that she’d only had 2 baths in her entire life), people have always wanted to smell good. And they’ve turned to perfume.

So what exactly is perfume? Have people always understood it to be scented liquids in little glass bottles, as we know it today? Well, oddly enough, some of the earliest perfumes were kept in little glass bottles…. As the French say, the more things change, the more things stay the same. So let’s look at perfume through the ages, and see what we find.

We see perfume now as liquids, which we can dab or mist on ourselves to give a pleasant scent. The word modern word perfume, however, comes from the Latin phrase per fumus, meaning “through smoke,” and that gives a hint to the origin of perfume. The earliest perfumes were the smokes given off by burning incense.

Incense and Ancient History

Incense is one of humanities oldest inventions; records of it go back to ancient Egypt, more than 3500 years ago. It was used to scent the air, and was mainly a “luxury” product: the wealthy used it in their homes, and the priests used it in religious rituals. Ordinary folks had to deal with smells of ordinary life.

Incense was a luxury item because of the tremendous effort that went into producing it. Then, as now, the more difficult it is to make something, the more it will cost. To get an idea of ancient incense preparation, just try to powder various barks, twigs, leaves, and flowers with a mortar and pestle. Now do it enough to make a barrel of incense.

And this brings us to another point: just where to perfumes come from? For the most part, perfumes and incenses are made from plant products. Many woods, such as cedar or mesquite, are quite aromatic, and we all know that flowers give off scent, as to many leaves. Other substances, such as oils and wines, can be added to these in various combinations, to create the desired scent. Generally, in today’s terminology, if the source of the scent is a solid, than it’s an incense; if the source is a liquid, it’s a perfume.

The ancient Egyptians knew about liquid scents, as well. They used various oils and flower extracts on themselves, and the use of scents spread through their entire society. Perfuming was part of bathing, and bathing was frequent. As a side note, the public baths of Greece and Rome probably owe something of their nature to Egyptian precursors.

The Egyptians also paid attention to the bottles and jars the used to keep perfumes. For the most part, these were ceramic or pottery, but they also used glass, just as we do today.

Bringing Perfume to the West

Egyptian culture may have disappeared, but the practice of perfuming lived on. The Greeks and Romans did not use incense as extensively, but they did take up the practice of using scented oils as part of bathing. Olive oil was frequently used a base for men’s fragrances. These perfumed oils actually served a dual purpose. They smelled good, of course, but in the hot Mediterranean climate they also protected the skin from the sun.

So, for much of history, perfumes were made by crushing flowers, barks, woods, or leaves, and then infusing them into various oils or burning them as incense. Things began to change in the Middle Ages, when Arab chemists developed a process to extract oils from flowers. Today we call these oils essential oils, not because they are essential to the perfume industry (they are), but because they are the “essence” of the scent.

Perfume Enters Modern History

Arab traders introduced essential oils to Europe in the Renaissance period, and perfume makers quickly recognized them as superior for the production of scented perfumes, especially liquid ones.

Perfume, as a way of masking the unpleasant odors of life, quickly became popular throughout Europe. In France it became particularly popular, in part by royal imprimatur… The court of Louis XV was called the “perfumed court” because of the prevalence of scent. It was in France that the practice of daubing women’s perfume on the wrists originated.

It wasn’t just the royal courtiers who were perfumed, though. The gloves and wigs that were the style of the day were frequently perfumed. If you’ve ever seen portraits from colonial America, notice the wigs that Washington and the other gentlemen are wearing; they’re white, not from age, but from the perfumed powder that was applied to them.

Heading Toward the 20th Century

The practice of making perfumes from essential oils, primarily from floral sources, remains with us today. The biggest difference between women’s fragrances now, and the women’s fragrances available in the 1700s, is the bottles.

Modern glass perfume bottles, as small bits of artwork, were the brainchild of Francois Coty, the French-Corsican perfume maker, who, in the 1890s and 1900s, developed a fabulous reputation as parfumier, or perfume maker. He also had an eye for marketing, and recognized that not everyone had the ‘nose of Coty.’ His insight was to sell his perfumes in small, attractive glass bottles. He partnered with a glass maker, and the rest is history….

Making the most of your workday

Making the Most of your Workday

Chaos and a hectic pace seem to be par for the course in most anyone's workday, and it can turn your workday upside down if you let it. However, with some careful planning, efficient scheduling and well-developed work habits, your workday can smoothly sail along.

Planning your workday actually starts the previous evening. Take a few moments before you leave work to jot down important meetings, phone calls that need to be made or returned, ideas or concerns that need to be discussed with your supervisors or co-workers, or other notes to yourself about projects you're working on or clients you're currently working with. That way, it'll be right there for you to see the next morning, and it'll make getting into the swing of things much easier.

You should stay on top of your both your desktop and electronic inboxes. Check e-mail when you arrive, and immediately sort each message into an appropriate folder. Even if you don't have time to deal with the contents of a message or even read it fully, sort it for later action. Sort through and organize regular mail and correspondence as well, and organize into piles for later action if necessary. Make sure you come back to these at the end of the day and take any appropriate action or you can at that time. Try to make it a habit of responding promptly to all mail requesting a timely response. Check through these inboxes during the course of the workday as well.

Return or make your most urgent and important phone calls early in the day. Like you, most people are more likely to be at their desks during this time.

Get in tuned with your personal energy level and schedule. If you have more energy at the beginning of the day, tackle your toughest projects then. If your energy level dips after lunch, take care of filing, e-mailing or other general tasks at this time.

At the end of the day, return to your checklist and prepare for tomorrow. Review your checklist and cross off completed items. Move any pending items to tomorrow's to-do list.

Utilize both an electronic and wall or desk calendar to keep track of deadlines, meetings, and appointments. If your day allows, try to work on those long-term projects a bit so that as their deadlines approach you won't feel so pressured or rushed.

Most importantly, take a break. Don't get into the habit of having your lunch at your desk or cutting your breaks short. A walk during your break and time away from your desk to recharge are probably the most important things you can do for yourself to recharge your battery, clear your mind and prepare to tackle the tasks at hand more productively and efficiently.

Going underground free music downloads

Not many years ago nobody had heard about music downloads and free music was nothing but a dream. When we wanted to play music we had to listen to radio, watch TV or go to the Music Store and buy our music which meant; long playing records (abbreviated as LP), extended playing records (abbr. EP), single playing records (with a and b sites though) or CDs. Time has changed. The popularity of online music downloads has soared in recent years thanks to devices such as the iPod and cell phones which can now play music everywhere you go. Unfortunately as many avid music listeners know the costs of subscription music services can add up quick. Thanks to underground music sites which offer free downloads of independent artists and bands there are alternatives to taking a bite out costs.

Many artists just getting started view the Internet as the best way to promote their music and setup sites or join existing ones to help spread their bands unique style or message. Even popular artists you may already know have jumped aboard and offered selections of their music for free in order to thank fans and promote upcoming new releases.

Many people are concerned about legal implications of music downloads because of recently news reports about illegal downloads. However with underground sites the songs are perfectly legal and made available to all. In fact the term "underground" refers to using alternative methods, such as the Internet, to distribute the music and has nothing to do at all with illegal downloading.

Anger management activities are recommended

Anger Management Activities are Recommended

Dealing with anger and its repercussions can be very challenging. Unaware of how to handle irritating and stressful situations may be a reason for many fits of anger and rage. Most people, with the exception of young children perhaps, recognize their problem with uncontrollable anger. Although there are many anger management activities which would enable them to better cope with confrontational situations, some people are uneducated regarding these techniques and activities.

There are man anger management activities individuals can practice or participate in when attempting to cope with daily feelings of anger. One activity which is recommended for anger management is exercise. Exercise has been proven to have a positive impact on an individual's mood. Exercise helps an individual to decrease any negative feelings they might be experiencing. An effect anger management activity might be as simple as going for a walk or jog in the park. Visiting the gym to work out of taking part in their favorite sport may work well for an individual as an anger management activity. Taking a hike or spending a few hours in the beauty of nature would definitely allow a person to clear their head and release tension. Outdoor anger management activities would surely create an environment of serenity.

Anger management activities such as attending a support group, camp or retreat would certainly help people who are experiencing difficulties controlling their anger. One positive aspect of attending anger management activities such as there is the individual would see first hand that their problem is not unique, that it is shared by plenty of other people. Being able to share with people in similar situations might be the key to anger management for some individuals. Sharing would likely provide hope through success stories. In anger management activities such as these, people are forced to deal with their anger issues through various activities group sessions and one on one consults.

Anger management activities are recommended when dealing with children who are coping with anger issues. A child is unlikely to respond well to group sessions and perhaps even become bored with one on one consults. Finding activities which are interesting and even challenging may be a better alternative. Kids enjoy fun and games. Designing anger management activities which are enjoyable yet beneficial would be so much more effective than forcing a child to sit down with an anger management counselor. Worksheets, coloring pages, individual games as well as interactive games would be accepted much better by children than a trip to the psychiatrist. When children are involved, it is essential to approach the problem carefully. Being overbearing will not go over well with kids. When considering anger management activities for kids, it is essential to be mindful that they are only children and the approach is important.

When considering anger management activities, an individual ought to choose one which they find interesting and enjoyable. Sticking a person in an unfamiliar setting may create feelings of anger which is not the intention of anger management activities. Finding an activity that works should be the key focus.

How to determine which mortgage is right for you

The choices that you have facing you when it comes to picking the right mortgage does not make it easy to get a good one. To make it worse, there are possibly so many different options with each one that you would almost think it was made to deliberately confuse. In order to make your selection easier, here are a few things you need to know.

Before you actually start looking, you should sit down and think some things through. One of these important things to consider is how long do you want to take to pay on your mortgage. You receive much greater savings for fewer years. A standard mortgage is 30 years, but you can also get 15, 20, 40 and even 50 years.

The next thing you want to do is to become a watcher of market interest rates for a while. By watching them go up and down, you will know when it is a good time to get an excellent rate. It will also indicate to you (don't just take the lenders word for it), whether you should get an adjustable rate mortgage (ARM) or a fixed rate mortgage. Of course, if you should make a mistake, or the economy changes significantly, you can always refinance down the road.

A fixed rate mortgage is the way to go when the interest rates are either on the way up, or if you simply want something that is stable and cannot cause you problems later. With an FRM, you always know what your payments will be. An adjustable rate mortgage, however, will give you lower rates when the interest rates are down, but can cause a problem if that changes.

Sometimes, lenders encourage people to get an ARM because it would allow you to buy a larger house. While this is true, it does not mean that you will be able to make the payments once the adjustable interest rate part of the mortgage becomes activated. It is a good idea to stick to the general rule of 36% total indebtedness (required by prime lenders) as a wise guideline for healthy finances.

Watch out for those mortgages that promise a lot. While they may deliver up front - it is what you do not see that can cause problems. It is a real good idea to familiarize yourself with the types of mortgages out there so you can be a careful consumer. There are some real traps when it comes to some mortgages and some lenders.

You also want to get several quotes from more than one lender so you have something to compare. Look at the various fees, the total cost, the interest rate, and more. You will quickly discover that not all lenders give the same deal. It will not take you long to find one or two that will stand out – then make your choice for the best deal.

Then you want to see if there might be some ways to get a greater savings. This can be done be reducing your indebtedness, and raising your credit score. You should check on this before you apply. It is also possible to reduce your interest rate even more by possibly buying points, or by making a larger down payment. Be sure that you at least consider these money saving options.

What are your shipping options

In the next few weeks, all the carriers will complete their 2008 pricing announcements. As we look at the future, it’s probably a good bet that these carriers’ rates aren’t going down any more than the cost of oil. So what’s the impact and action plan for your business? Given the size of the increases that have been announced so far, multichannel companies need to look at all the options open to them and develop short and long-term strategies to reduce the impact.

UPS has announced that they will be increasing Ground rates by 4.9% in 2008, which is equal to last year. (FedEx will most likely match the UPS Ground increase, but that information has not yet been released.) Under new rates, the Ground commercial zone 2, 1-lb. rate has increased 5.0% over last year—overall, a 16% increase over three years, from $3.62 in 2005 to $4.20 in 2008. For 1-70 lb. packages the average increase is 4.8%. However, if the majority of your shipments are in zones 4 or 5 – like many businesses are - the increase is about 5.16%. Depending on your warehouse location and the predominant zones in which you ship to customers, the impact could be more or less than this average. Meanwhile, the Ground residential minimum charge increased to $6.15, a combination of the base rate for zone 2 and the Ground residential surcharge. In a quick survey of shipping tables of 66 multichannel companies, we found that 71% of the tables were lower than this $6.15 minimum charge.

As AFMS Logistics Management Group’s Managing Director Rick Collins points out, “The announced rate increases of 4.9% for Ground and 6.9% for Air from FedEx and UPS masks the true impact for many shippers. The base rates may average the announced increases across the board; however higher zone express shippers could experience increases in the 9-10% range. Additionally, surcharges are increasing up to 20% in some cases. Surcharges for irregular and large packages are up 8.3% to 12.5%. Commercial remote add-ons are increasing 7.1% and residential fees are up 5.4% for Ground.”

All is not totally gloom. There was some good news on November 15, when the Postal Service Governors announced that future prices will be adjusted using new regulations issued by the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) on October 29. Consistent with the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act of 2006, future price increases for mailing services will be capped at the rate of inflation. Said Postmaster General John E Potter, “This delivers one of the main goals of the new law for business mailers—a predictable price schedule.” The new pricing regulations give the Postal Service added flexibility for shipping services. “We intend to use this new flexibility to grow our competitive business,” said Potter, “offering volume discounts and contract pricing.”

Looking at the industry as a whole, however, Edward Wolfe, transportation stock analyst for Bear Stearns & Co., had this to say: “Our sense is FedEx is clearly trying to send a message of pricing strength to both its customers and to competitors UPS and DHL.”

I think we’ve gotten the message. Now we need to do everything we can to reduce freight costs.

With the continual increases in the cost of oil and shipping, we think that companies need to assess both short and longer-term strategies. Here are 15 short - and long-term options to investigate:

1. Renegotiate your contract.

2. Can you use USPS to your advantage?

3. Are you using best-way rate shopping?

4. Consider package weighing, and take out inserts when they push the package into a higher bracket.

5. Can you leverage economies of scale using the same carriers for inbound and outbound freight?

6. Investigate the economics of a second warehouse to reduce the distance and cost to ship to the customer.

7. Reassess your shipping and handling table in light of the changes.

8. If you’re going to use free shipping, re-assess the minimum dollar order value and its effects on your transportation costs. Should the minimum be increased?

9. Review whether you should use by-item shipping charges in your web and catalog copy for heavy and oversize products.

10.Can you make use of package consolidators and zone skipping?

11. Assess your total operation and determine if other costs can be reduced to help offset these increases.

12. Improve your inventory forecasting and systems to improve inventory position and decrease the cost of back orders; keep in mind the $6.15 Ground residential minimum charge.

13. From marketing and merchandising perspectives, how can the average order value be increased so that shipping cost is not such a large percent of the average or small order?

14. Review your policies for giving away free freight to return merchandise.

15. Is it time to use an experienced transportation consulting company to help you get savings? Or are you big enough to hire an internal specialist to continually assess and hopefully lower your costs?

Contract renegotiation is your #1 weapon. How much can be saved will depend on a number of factors: how well prepared you are in terms of knowing your package shipping profile; knowledge of carrier pricing and what can be discounted and negotiated; the 70+ accessorial charges and how they make up your total costs, etc. An increase in the carrier’s list rates does not necessarily translate to higher shipping costs. Bear Stearns’ Wolfe says, “At this point, we continue to expect the market, not announced large rate increases, to determine the direction of pricing.” “The market” means competitive bidding and your ability to negotiate. Another factor to consider is how important your account is to the depot or hub. We’ve learned that sometimes smaller accounts are much more important than management might realize, given the outbound volume.

The most nimble multichannel companies will determine how to offset these foreboding continual increases. We believe it will take all the weapons—both short-term tactics and longer-term strategies—to keep profitability from eroding.

Playing Online: Tips for Parent to Keep Kids Safe

Kids spend a lot of time playing games online. This equates to kids having more chances to meet strangers and less time to do the house chores, school duties, and personal responsibility. This also means that there is a great chance that they expose themselves to inappropriate venue, unsafe people, and improper games.

Thus, you should do something about it. This doesn't mean that you ban online games from your kids; you just have to make some modifications on the way you let your kids play games online.

• Learn the basics. As parents, you have the responsibility to your kids and the things that influence them online. Make sure that you are familiar with the game ratings and the sites that offer online games that are appropriate for the age of your kids. It is better to read reviews from gaming sites to know appropriate games for your kids to play.

• Set rules. This must be done before your kids play for the first time. Discuss with them the specific time, day, and conditions they are allowed to play online; and the dangers of giving out personal information online including their name and the place they live. Make sure that they understand them pretty well.

• Use handle or nicknames. As was mentioned, your kids shouldn't tell their personal information to anyone online. Encourage them not use their real names online. Aside from the security, using a handle is cool.

• Watch and Suggest. Know what games your kids play and whom they play with. Make sure that the games are appropriate for their age. If they don’t know where to find a gaming site for their age, find one for them.

• Monitor game messages and chats. Most interactive games online allow players to talk with each other. And there are instances where players use offensive words. Teach your kids to mute the voice message or block their messages from these players. You can also report these players to the administrator of the game through chat, email or feedbacks.

• Play with them. There is no better way to ensuring the safety of your kids online than by sitting and playing with them.

• Be open. Teach your kids to approach you if they encounter bullies online or if they feel uncomfortable with what they experienced during the game. Respond to them immediately.

Maternity clothes 34

Pregnancy is a wonderful time, but one of the most annoying things about the whole process is outgrowing your own clothing and then trying to find maternity clothes. Generally, you begin to not fit into your regular clothing around the time you reach three months, or twelve weeks, of pregnancy. This is mainly due to bloating and not actually due to weight or baby yet, but nonetheless it is a struggle. This time is especially difficult because you generally are still too small for maternity clothes, but you certainly have a hard time fitting into your old pants. For awhile, instead of wearing maternity clothes that would fall off of me, I would just wear yoga pants or wear longer shirts with my old jeans unbuttoned. It is not the ideal solution, but to spend money on maternity clothes that will only last you a few weeks seems ridiculous.

Once you get to the next stage of actually fitting comfortably into maternity clothes, then the fun part starts of actually trying to find some to purchase. Maternity clothes seem to be this unattainable hallucination, where you think you might actually be able to find something that is cute and flattering when nothing could be further from the truth. The real problem comes in if you are short or tall and are trying to find pants that do not cost an arm and a leg…it basically will not happen. If you are lucky, you will be able to find at least two or three pieces of maternity clothes that will fit you well and you will wear them into the ground.

Towards the end of pregnancy, you reach a point where even maternity clothes do not fit over your ever expanding stomach. This is when you see women begin to wear their husband’s shirts, or just completely give up and let their stomachs hang out. It is an uncomfortable stage, and you certainly won’t be a fashionista during this time, but be grateful it only will last a few weeks.

Once pregnancy is over, you think you will immediately be able to get back into your much missed old clothing, but many women still need to wear their maternity clothes for a few weeks while their body readjusts. Don’t fret, though, because it won’t last for long. Within a few weeks you should at least be able to wear pants that button once again!

Check out payment protection insurance

If you check your credit card bill carefully, you will notice that there is sometimes an optional extra charge there. You may have selected it and in that case it will cost you a set amount, or it may be that you have not selected it and in that case it will be zero. This payment protection insurance or PPI. Payment protection insurance has grown rapidly in the last couple of years and is now offered by virtually all credit card providers, on all of their products. It has had both praise and criticism, with one of the strongest criticisms being that it offers the customer no protection at all, and only protects the lender.

Payment protection insurance is an optional insurance cover that you can pay for. The cost will be added to your monthly credit card bill and will typically be assessed on the basis of your outstanding credit card balance. So, for example, the cost of the insurance might be five pence on every pound you owe on your credit card bill, so if you owed one hundred pounds, five pounds would be added to the bill as the cost of the payment protection insurance.

One of the fiercest criticisms of payment protection insurance is that it will not offer any protection. It is designed to guard you against such possibilities as losing your job or becoming unable to work. If you become unable to meet your repayments on a credit card, typically what happens is you will become subject to harsh penalty charges, your credit rating will be severely damaged, and eventually the debt will be referred to a collection agency.

What the payment protection insurance is supposed to do is step in in such situations and continue making the repayments on your behalf. However, there are very strict conditions attached to payment protection insurance. It will only meet your repayments if you have lost your job through no fault of your own. So for, example, if you are made redundant, or become ill, the insurance might step in, but if you simply quite your job, it will not. Also, there is the issue that many forms of illness will not be covered, or if they last too long, the repayments will only be kept up on your behalf for a limited time.

Therefore, you should consider carefully before committing to payment protection insurance. You can cancel it at any time, but it is one more expense that you should think about before incurring.

Many credit card companies make you choose their own payment protection insurance, however, did you know you did not have to?

Just recently the Office of Fair Trade announced that credit card companies were to allow consumers to choose their own payment protection insurance from a third party. This move is a welcome relief to consumers as now they can take their pick from a variety of payment protection insurers at a lower cost. It many cases consumers have found their payments have been halved and that they have more insurance cover than before.

Competitive term life insurance updating your policy

If you are in your 40's and 50's, there is great news when it comes to competitive term life insurance rates. Let's take a look at how your situation could affect your life insurance rates.

Use Competitive Term Life Insurance To Reassess Your Needs

Couples who think that they no longer need to look for competitive life insurance prices after their children reach 18 years of age, may want to check current market prices. Many term life insurance policies are purchased to protect the family financially while the children grow up. After a child reaches 18 or so, policies may not be updated.

Even if your financial situation shows you are close to paying off your mortgage and your children's education expenses, you may still benefit from looking for a competitive term life insurance policy. Most policies are better priced today than they were a decade ago, because people are living longer.

Remember that a competitive term life insurance quote will get you the best deal available on the market. Because, if you are still somewhat short of assets, term life insurance can provide ready funds in the event of the death of a partner.

How Do I Look For Competitive Term Life Insurance?

When you are trying to determine how much life insurance you need to purchase, determine how much income would be lost if a spouse were to die. With this number in mind, calculate your numbers to see how much capital you would need to replace that income through an investment.

Other conditions when shopping for competitive term life insurance are; the health of a parent, financial commitments that may have been made and the needs of any children still living at home.

You need to yearly reassess your financial goals. Before making any major financial decision, meet with your accountant or lawyer for advice. You need to bring everything up to date, including getting quotes for your family, of the most competitive term life insurance.

How to be a great photographer

Take one camera (digital or analog) and film as needed. Put film into camera (if necessary). Snap shutter. Before snapping shutter, point camera at a subject that will give the viewer a meaningful aesthetic experience.

For someone who has no idea of what a camera is, learning how to carry out the first part of the prescription should take anywhere from a week to a month. However, the second part will take from a few years to forever. It's this part that I want to discuss.

There are several approaches to developing as a photographer.

1. Do nothing

A lot of people use their camera to record family celebrations and vacations and are content with the outcome.

2. Study web pages that have tips for better photographs

These will often help to tighten up your pictures. If you want to get a few ideas in a few minutes, this is the place to look.

3. Get your photographs critiqued at an appropriate website

This is a good way to learn how others respond to your pictures. But be careful. Not all criticism is equal. Some of your evaluators may be experienced professionals and others beginners. If you are going to rely on this method, it is important that you learn enough to evaluate the evaluators (see point 4).

4. Study the work of acknowledged great artists

By taking this route you can learn what elements contribute to a fine photograph. This takes time and study. Don't simply look at a few photos but read art criticism to find out what professional educators think and why.

One drawback here is that you won't be able to see how your work measures up. If you plan to take this route and also join a critique website (see point 3), you will be in a position to know which criticism to ignore and which to pay attention to.

5. Join a photography club

Clubs often have lectures, workshops, and juried shows. This can be a good hands-on learning experience.

6. Take a class (online or in person)

There are all sorts of classes. If you choose one that has assignments and feedback, you can be guided through the fundamentals by an experienced photographer.

7. Get a coach

At this point I have to say a few words about the difference between a competent photographer and a person who uses photography as an art form. The competent photographer will be able to produce pleasing postcard - or calendar-quality pictures that look like postcard and calendar pictures. The artist will be able to take photographs that represent his or her vision of the world. If you are after the former and not the latter, you should choose among methods 1 through 6. A good coach should help you develop your unique way of seeing.

8. Go to an art school

This, for people who have the time and the money, is by far the best. I studied at the San Francisco Art Institute. Here's how it worked. I went to a photography class two or three times a week. At every class meeting each student pinned 20-30 photographs to the wall and, under the supervision of an accomplished professional, we criticized our own and one another's work. We also took photography history classes as well as courses in other fields of art. Mine were film, drawing, sculpture, and printmaking. There were frequent guest lecturers. We never learned any rules. In fact, rules were never mentioned. But through a combination of years of exposure to all types of art, classical through contemporary, and having to produce 50-60 new photographs every week, we eventually learned what art was about.

There are many ways to improve your photography. Before you make your choice you should decide on your goal. If you have little time and just want to tidy up your pictures a bit, read the tips pages. On the other extreme, if your goal is to be an artist, there is nothing close to attending art school. Most people fall between these extremes.

It specialist better than a generalist

Now how do you become an IT specialist, when to provide virtual IT you need to be a generalist? As an IT specialist, you will still need to provide a lot of different services. You may be:

· network design

· helping clients with procurement

· managing relations

· dealing with the phone companies, the Web hosts and the Internet access ISPs

· deciding what to buy and inspecting it when it comes in

· doing the configuration, testing, integration, customization, training, and troubleshooting.

You're doing everything. So yes, that is being a generalist. But there's nothing that says that you want to be a generalist for everyone under the sun. As an IT specialist, you will find your marketing efforts easier.

Be Choosy With Your Clients

You should be all things, to some of the people by providing the soup-to-nuts complete solution. You provide true virtual IT, one-stop shopping… the buck stops here. You take full accountability of everything that your clients need, but limit the scope of the kind of clients that you go after.

Take Real Estate, for Example

If you're specializing in real estate, you've probably done a lot of work with commercial real estate firms and you're one of the top IT consulting firms in this niche. You can have the testimonials and references to show that you have indeed done work for these firms. So you're coming across as an industry IT specialist.

Specializing Doesn't Require Extensive Experience

Finding a niche could be as easy as having one or two clients that you've been working with for a year or two and you happen to have gotten involved in migrating an older DOS industry application to a 32-bit, or to a Web-based application. Over an extended period of time, you get to know the line of business applications. Often, that's a big differentiator between you and anyone else that they could conceivably call.

The Bottom Line on Being an IT Specialist

So the point: it doesn't take that much industry experience to position yourself as an IT specialist within that industry. But that specialization will make an enormous difference in your marketing results.

Can hypnosis help to eliminate pain

Pain is a subject that touches everyone. After all, it is a human condition from which we all suffer at one time or another. There are headaches, dental procedures, sports injuries, broken bones, soft-tissue injuries, and psychosomatic pain.

Research shows that 75% to 80% of all adults will experience lower back pain at some time in their lives. Approximately 40 million Americans suffer from arthritis pain and as many as 45 million suffer from chronic, recurring headaches. There are thousands of people every year who suffer the agony of surgical interventions and thousands more who endure the pain of debilitating or terminal illnesses.

All of this pain falls into two basic categories: (1) acute pain, which is of short duration and (2) chronic pain, which continues for weeks, months or years.

Most people respond to pain - whether acute or chronic - by taking drugs of some kind. But drugs are often a temporary solution.

What few people realize is that the ancient art of hypnosis offers a safe, effective alternative for reducing sensitivity to pain.

Hypnosis has been shown effective in the management of various types of pain. Besides providing an effective solution for maladies such as headaches and acute injuries, hypnosis offers a unique solution for those suffering from chronic conditions like back pain and arthritis as well as intermediate and advanced stages of cancer. Studies show that patients with chronic diseases require fewer painkillers to achieve pain relief when they practice hypnosis. These same patients exhibit fewer signs of anxiety and experience greater comfort during medical procedures.

Hypnosis also has been shown to be effective in reducing nausea and vomiting in chemotherapy patients.

The most effective approach for acute pain appears to be the use of hypnotic suggestions focusing on anxiety reduction and minimizing the importance of the pain. For chronic pain, it is more effective to confront the pain directly under hypnosis, dealing with both the pain's physical and psychological effects.

Another area where hypnosis offers significant positive results is in dealing with pre - and post-operative patients. Using hypnosis in preparation for surgery has been shown to reduce the experience of pain during surgery, resulting in the need for less anesthetics. Hypnosis as a pain management tool with surgical patients also has been shown to reduce nausea and greatly increase the recovery rate in most patients, thereby truncating the length of time spent in the hospital. (That creates another rarely mentioned positive result: reduced medical costs!)

But efficacy and lower medical expenses are not the only positives related to the use of hypnosis for pain management. This modality has no dangerous side effects. Unlike medications, hypnosis does not become less effective with use and does not require stronger and stronger doses to cope with pain. While patients may have to ingest costly medications several times a day for years, they have the potential for reducing or eliminating their pain in just a few hypnotic sessions for significantly less cost.

Does hypnosis always work? In the area of pain control, everyone can be helped to SOME degree. There are essentially five categories into which subjects fall:

1. Those who find total and permanent relief.

2. Those that have a decrease in the severity of pain.

3. Those who experience pain relief initially, but who need occasional reinforcement.

4. Those that experience intermittent relief.

5. Those that still have pain, but feel 10-30% less pain than before.

What accounts for these differences in relief? The answer appears to be the patient's susceptibility to hypnosis - the level of relaxation reached during the hypnotic sessions. The deeper the relaxation, the more effective the pain reduction.

Certainly, no treatment for pain - whether chemical, physical or psychological - is effective all the time. However, hypnosis has shown over and over again that it can help people reduce or eliminate both acute and chronic pain. Best of all, it works its magic without any side effects.

As a safe, effective alternative for reducing sensitivity to pain, hypnosis is second to none.

Protective preventative maintenance

:
You have just invested in a new vehicle, the one of your dreams, and you take it on a trip across Canada. You only put gas in it and drive sightseeing and following your nose. Filters and oil changes are ignored. The car breaks down in the middle of that long stretch of road between Manitoba and Alberta. It takes two days to get you up and running and the bill is more than a year's worth of oil changes and regular maintenance. Just like the family vehicle, your business computer systems require regular maintenance to ensure optimum system performance and uptime to prevent productivity losses.

What really happens during system failure?

  • The user is unable to do their job using the productivity tools you have provided
  • Potentially this may affect two or more employees if their activities are linked
  • The system failure may be enterprise wide, causing everyone down time
  • The failure may happen at the "worst possible time". Closing date for an RFP submission, payroll, month-end or year-end or ????
  • There may be total data loss
  • The people affected must contact the support person and explain the issue. Hopefully, the service provider is immediately available and they must only wait while the technician travels to the site. Once on site, the technician must diagnose the problem and implement the repair.
  • Will parts be needed?
  • Will they need to be ordered?
  • Will a temporary loaner be required?
  • Will software need to be reloaded?
  • Will software support need to be contacted?

All of these will add to the time to resolve the problem. During this time one or more of your staff will be unable to do their job using the tools provided. How much money is lost in employee downtime, lost sales opportunities, damaged client information, investments to rebuild data, and potentially no available back-up? Emergency callout rates for the service provider may be in effect. Express shipping costs, Software support costs, and data recovery costs may apply. You are looking at an expensive solution!

What is the cost of a pro-active repair?

With an affordable investment, you will find a program of regularly scheduled preventive maintenance to be most valuable and the best return on your dollar. This type of activity will avoid down time and loss of production from employees. Your investment would pay for itself by eliminating a major system failure or data loss.

  • Loss of service to user scheduled for a time of minimum requirements.
  • User can pre-plan alternate activity
  • Cost of labour at reduced prescheduled rate
  • Cost of parts without emergency shipping costs

Find a solid company that will provide a program of regularly scheduled maintenance visits who will become familiar with your computer and network system. That technician should visit the site and document all computer and networking hardware, peripherals and all operating systems, productivity and application software. This will give you both a solid understanding of the current network environment and will provide a starting point for a preventive maintenance program. This site visit will also enable you to analyze and improve efficiencies within your system.

There are many other advantages in this type of process that should include:

  • Reduces the incidence of emergency and service calls.
  • IT service able to be budgeted for more accurately.
  • Proactive preventive maintenance solves issues before they become problems.
  • Reduces IT cost per user by improving system uptime and productivity.
  • Discounted hourly rate based on a minimum site visit.
  • Timely accounting for all work performed.
  • Dependable and reliable tools to operate your business.

When you invest in a tool to get your work done, you would not think of not maintaining it and your network system is no different; it is a critical tool that needs to be maintained. Plan for it, budget for it and it will give you a solid system to improve your bottom line.

How safe is safe

There has been an increasing amount of emphasis in recent times on the subject of keeping the information on your computer safe. The terms Back-Up, Archive, Data Storage and Security being mentioned frequently, but what is all about?

In simple terms, people are increasingly holding more and more information on their computers, be it photos, personal data and finance, business data, accounts, contacts, addresses and much more.

What everyone needs to understand is that the information held on your computer is a very vulnerable entity and can be very easily and completely lost, either by component failure, malicious acts or theft. If loss of the information you keep on your computer would cause you distress, then you need to take steps to ensure it is kept safe and that you would be able to continue even if your computer was stolen.

The only definite way of safeguarding against the many different kinds of threats is to have a copy of the valuable information and keep it away from the computer, this is commonly referred to as back-up. In case of loss, the information can then be restored to a computer from the safe back-up copy. A back up consists of an exact copy of this important data, kept on a separate storage medium such as a CD / DVD or an external tape or hard disk drive.

Naturally, a back-up is only as good as the last time that you actually made a back-up copy, so it is common practice to create a new back-up frequently and overwrite the old copy. How frequently you do this depends on how often your valuable information changes, the more changes, the more frequent the back-up. A back-up can be performed manually by simply copying the data you wish to back-up to your chosen media, or the process can be automated by using specialist back-up software programmes. Back-up software allows you to select the data that needs to be backed-up, when to make the back-up and where to copy the backed-up data to, this set up can then be memorised by the back-up software. Backing-up your data then becomes a relatively quick and simple process.

Many confuse back-up with "archiving". Archiving is where you transfer data, which is important enough to keep, but no longer required (e. g. old photos, old accounts) to an external, safe storage medium for future reference. The archived data is then removed from the computers main hard drive to free-up space.

Whether backing-up or archiving, there is a choice of media you can record your copy on to:

Floppy or Zip Disk

A Floppy or Zip Disk drive provides a simple solution. The downside to this method however, is very limited recording space and not a particularly reliable or long-term solution.

Recordable CD or DVD

If you have a CD or DVD recordable drive, this is a better longer-term solution with more space. The downside is that the recording process can be a pain as you cannot just drag and drop and that you need CD's or DVD's to record on.

This type of backup can be cumbersome, time consuming and sometimes frustrating, depending on the software and the quality of disks used.

When using this method of backup, remember to check the disk you have transferred your data to, to make sure your computer can read the disc ok in future.

USB Pen Drives

Also known by various other names USB Pen Drives are an excellent low cost solution for smaller back-up purposes being easy to use and they are also great for transferring data from one computer to another.

External USB Hard Drives

For most users the best storage solution for back-up and archiving purposes is the USB external hard drive, being reliable, easy to install (just plug in to your USB port) and easy to use (just drag and drop your files to be backed-up). USB External Hard Drives are available in pocket or desktop sizes and storage capacities from a few Gb to 250Gb + offering a huge amount of recording space. Being a plug in device they can be easily disconnected and kept separate from your computer and out of harm's way. Some external USB Hard Drives like Iomega come packaged with back-up software too.

Does green tea offer the prescription for beating cancer

With early detection, cancer is no longer an automatic death sentence. However, an initial diagnosis still brings with it a host of questions: What is the best course of treatment? Are conventional approaches best? Or are non-traditional therapies preferable—particularly if the cancer does not seem to respond to chemotherapy and radiation.

In recent years, a great deal of emphasis has been placed on unconventional therapies for cancer. For instance, in an article in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, Elizabeth Kaegi of the Task Force on Alternative Therapies of the Canadian Breast Cancer Research Initiative discussed the fact that cancer patients are trying a number of intriguing therapies, including Essiac, Iscador, hydrazine sulfate, vitamins A, C, and E, and 714-X. But perhaps one of the most popular therapies that has been tried is green tea. In fact, go to your local convenience store and you may find jug after jug of green tea in assorted flavors. Still, you may be wondering what makes green tea so special—and if it really can help to combat cancer.

Green Tea—The Basics

Green tea is produced by steaming or frying the leaves of the shrub known as Camellia sinensis. The leaves, which are not fermented, are then dried. For 5,000 years, families in China and Japan have hailed green tea as a valuable stimulant and an effective remedy for stomach ailments. You can even purchase green tea in capsule form now, although the actual medicinal benefits from such capsules have yet to be established.

Dried tea leaves are far more complex than you might think. Specifically, they are made up of phytochemicals, plant alkaloids, proteins, carbohydrates, fiber, phenolic acids, and minerals. Of course, the exact composition of the leaves varies, depending on when the leaves are harvested and how they are processed. You should also be aware of the fact that the composition of green tea varies from that of black tea, since black tea has fewer polyphenols because of the fermentation process.

Side Effects

Green tea can contain anywhere from 10 to 80 milligrams of caffeine—the actual amount depends on how it has been produced and stored. Since caffeine is a known stimulant, green tea may lead to a racing heart rate and insomnia. As a result, heart patients, pregnant women, and nursing mothers should ideally drink no more than two cups of green tea a day.

Cancer Prevention

Numerous scientific studies have explored the use of green tea as a cancer preventative. According to Kaegi, digestive cancers appear to be particularly responsive to green tea. In fact, such tea appears to somewhat decrease the risk of experiencing cancer of the digestive tract. Given the fact that such conclusions are the result of a number of epidemiological studies, it appears that the idea that green tea can prevent cancer has some merit.

News from the Lab

But what about treating cancer? Can green tea be as effective in treatment as it is in prevention? There has been some limited lab work investigating the possibility that green tea can be used as an alternative form of cancer treatment. However, at this point, there have only been a few animal studies and no human studies. The results of these studies are, at this point, inconclusive.

Yet, it should be noted that one study showed that, if extracts of green tea are applied to mouse skin, it appears to stop the development of skin cancer when known carcinogens have been applied to the skin. Other research indicates that green tea can stop the growth of tumors or decrease the number of tumors in animals that have been exposed to cancer-causing agents.

In some animals, green tea and tea extracts prevented cancer cells from metastasizing. There are also indications that green tea extracts can prevent chromosomal abnormalities that can lead to cancer, as well as reduce the size of breast and prostate tumors.

The Magic of EGCG

Green tea contains an antioxidant known as epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG. This substance appears to inhibit enzymes which are responsible for cell replication, stop the adhesion of cells, and disrupt the communication pathways which enable cell division to occur. However, EGCG seems to be most critically important as an antioxidant.

Final Conclusions

Researchers believe that there is evidence to suggest that green tea can be used to treat cancer. However, scientists add that additional research is absolutely essential in order to determine the full range of treatment that green tea might provide. For instance, researchers must determine which cancers are most likely to be abated through the use of green tea or green tea extracts. Since there is also evidence to indicate that green tea can prevent cancer as well, drinking green tea is not only safe—it’s also highly recommended by some medical experts. Therefore, green tea may not just be a thirst-quencher—it may also be a key ingredient of a healthy diet.

How to hire your first cleaning employee

Copyright 2006 The Janitorial Store

You may have started your cleaning company part-time and thought that as the business grew you could quit your "day job" and put more time into the business. But as your cleaning business grows you may find you can no longer manage all the tasks you need to handle, no matter how much time you devote to it. If you do not have time to market your business or to keep in contact with your clients regularly, it may be time to think of adding an employee. Hiring help not only allows you to keep your cleaning business growing, but also allows you to take some much needed and hard earned time off.

Start your hiring process by making a list of the tasks needed in your cleaning business and then decide on those you want (or need) someone else to do. Your first employee should be more than just someone who takes the extra work off your shoulders. This individual should be able to help with the overall growth of your cleaning business by helping not only with cleaning responsibilities, but by making sure they provide great customer service.

As you start the hiring process, decide on the job title and prepare a comprehensive job description. This will help you to focus on the responsibilities you want your employees to have, and then when you hire your first employee, he or she will know what his or her duties are.

As well as a job description, you will need a way to evaluate job performance. You should give a written evaluation regularly. During the first year of employment you may want to do evaluations at 3 months, 6 months, and then at the end of the year. After the first year, job performance evaluations are usually given annually on the employee’s employment anniversary date. Also be prepared to offer constructive feedback as needed. If an employee is doing a task wrong, you need to take steps to immediately correct the situation.

Hiring the right individual can take time. Set realistic goals for when you want that first person on board. It may take longer than a week or two to advertise, interview and get the right person on board. As you interview potential candidates, look for individuals who have an eager and willing attitude. You will be able to train most of the specific skills an individual will need. If you find someone who has the right attitude don't overlook them if they have never run a buffer, carpet steamer or backpack vacuum.

You may be eager to get someone on board once you have a job description prepared. But before you advertise for help, make sure you have the following addressed:

Is your employee covered by your insurance? Check with your insurance agent to make sure your policy covers employees. As an employer, you’ll also need to provide workers compensation insurance. Your agent should be able to help you get the right insurance.

Do you have an employee manual and is it up-to-date? Your employee manual will cover the orientation, evaluations, time off procedures, equipment policies, and the overall working responsibilities that your employees will have. It may also include safety information - or the safety manual may be a separate document. All of your policies should be in writing before your employee's first day of work.

Your cleaning employees will most likely be working in buildings after hours, so you will need to conduct background checks. Your clients may not require background checks of cleaning employees. However it is an added selling point for your services to let any potential clients know that all of your employees go through a background check before they start working for your cleaning company.

Have a training program in place. This can be a detailed manual or guidelines for one-on-one training. The training program should include how to perform all tasks that you expect your new hire to complete. In addition, as your cleaning employees will be working with chemicals and equipment, they need to have specific training to address safety issues to comply with OSHA standards.

If you are a one-person operation you may not have obtained a federal employment identification number. This number is required once you hire employees. To get the necessary form to obtain a federal ID number, go to the IRS website at www. irs. gov.

Register with your state's employment department. All states have a system set up for unemployment compensation. Employers are required to pay into this fund through unemployment compensation taxes.

Set up a payroll system for withholding taxes and making payroll tax payments to the IRS. Check with your accountant to make sure you file the necessary paperwork.

There are specific labor notices the government requires you to post at the worksite. The Department of Labor's website at www. dol. gov has a listing of the federal posters you need to post. Check with your state's department of labor to see if they have added requirements.

Hiring your first employee is big step towards the growth of your cleaning business. Making sure you have all of your i's dotted and t's crossed before you bring someone on board will help with the transition of moving your cleaning business from a one-person shop to the next level. Your cleaning business can grow exponentially with the right employees and it all starts by getting that first employee on board!

The many styles of celtic engagement rings

Irish traditions are rich and full of both whimsy and sentiment. This is especially true when it comes to weddings and marriage. The Irish symbolize beautifully the real meaning of marriage with their wedding rings. Celtic engagement rings and wedding bands have a style all their own, but still lend themselves to adding your own personal touches. An antique gold ring with the telltale woven pattern is the perfect symbol of the blending of two lives.

Designing Your Celtic Engagement Rings

Once you’ve decided you love the tradition of the Irish wedding ring, you can design your own engagement ring and wedding bands to incorporate those styles.

First you begin with the precious metal that will hold the pattern and any gemstones. Rings can be fashioned out of gold, silver, or platinum. Jewelers will tell you what material best suits the stones you may be setting within the ring. Platinum for example is the perfect material for setting a high quality diamond since it will not discolour or yellow the stone as gold may.

Next the metal is moulded into the traditional woven Celtic pattern. Even an antique Celtic ring can be remade to suit the new couple’s preferences. It can be carefully resized as to not lose the pattern and it can have personal gemstones added to it.

Rings can be made in many different widths too. For example, if you have a one carat diamond, you will probably want a wider band than a Ѕ carat diamond would hold. That is true especially if you want to show off the intertwined pattern and not have it hidden by the stone.

Adding gems to a Celtic style ring gives you many design options. You can intersperse small stones throughout the crosses on the weaving or add one centre stone. The stone can be part of the engagement ring with a solitaire placed there, and then have either a plain Celtic band or one with several coordinating stones. The design possibilities are endless.

Making Your Ring a Part of the Wedding Ceremony

It is customary in many Jewish, Christian or non denominational wedding services to exchange rings. To further highlight the reason you chose a Celtic engagement ring, you can include a brief message of its meaning on your invitation.

The meaning of the intertwined or woven pattern is symbolic of the blending and joining of two lives into one never ending circle. You can further enhance this message through the music you choose for your ceremony.

Irish or not, using Celtic engagement rings and Irish music will make any wedding ceremony and reception special. This is a day to always remember and the rings you wear will be a part of that memory long after the champagne is gone and the guests have returned home. Keep the feelings you have on that day a part of everyday with the symbolic ring style.

Bus travel 04

Bus Travel

Bus travel is one of the most underrated ways to get somewhere. Although a lot of people prefer to travel by plane, I have always liked traveling by bus. When you traveled by bus, you get a chance to take it slow. You see the scenes and sites around the country, talk to the people around you, and relax and let the driver do the work. You don't have to deal with the hassle of airport security, and you certainly don't have to pay airport prices.

I like to travel by bus and train because I like to not worry about getting there quickly. Sometimes, you miss the connection or your bus breaks down and you have to take a little bit longer. It doesn't matter, however, because there are always people to talk to and the prices are low enough that you can afford to be a little bit late. Anyway, bus travel is a lot more reliable than it used to be. Out of a good 50 bus trips in the past two years, I have only run into two breakdowns that cost a serious amount of time.

One of the things that you have to keep in mind about bus travel is that your bags are your responsibility. It isn't like the airlines at all. When you buy airline tickets, you check your bags at the gate and pick them up when you leave. The airline make sure that they get there safely with a reasonably high rate of success. With bus travel, however, you might want to keep an eye on your bags when you change buses. When there is a change, the bus drivers will load and unload bags that are scheduled to be moved. It is easy for them to miss yours if you don't keep an eye open. I've had it happen to me more than once, and it can be a big hassle. Nonetheless, it is easy to avoid as long as you make sure to get out of the bus and watch what the driver is doing.

Greyhound bus travel is by far the most popular kind. In most of the country, they run the majority of the buses. Part of it is quality and part of it is brand name recognition. When people think about cross-country bus travel, they automatically picture a Greyhound bus. I've been in more of their buses than American Coachways or any of the other companies

Get rid of toxic black mold

Mold exposure does not always present a health problem indoors. However some people are sensitive to molds. These people may experience symptoms such as nasal stuffiness, eye irritation, wheezing, or skin irritation when exposed to molds. Some people may have more severe reactions to molds. Severe reactions may occur among workers exposed to large amounts of molds in occupational settings, such as farmers working around moldy hay. Severe reactions may include fever and shortness of breath. Immunocompromised persons and persons with chronic lung diseases like COPD are at increased risk for opportunistic infections and may develop fungal infections in their lungs.

How to Remove Molds?

In most cases mold can be removed from hard surfaces by a thorough cleaning with commercial products, soap and water, or a bleach solution of 1 cup of bleach in 1 gallon of water. Absorbent or porous materials like ceiling tiles, drywall, and carpet may have to be thrown away if they become moldy. If you have an extensive amount of mold and you do not think you can manage the cleanup on your own, you may want to contact a professional who has experience in cleaning mold in buildings and homes. It is important to properly clean and dry the area as you can still have an allergic reaction to parts of the dead mold and mold contamination may recur if there is still a source of moisture.

If you choose to use bleach to clean up mold:

1. Never mix bleach with ammonia. Mixing bleach and ammonia can produce dangerous, toxic fumes.

2. Open windows and doors to provide fresh air.

3. Wear non-porous gloves and protective eye wear.

4. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using bleach or any other cleaning product.

Specific Recommendations to prevent Mold:

1. Keep humidity level in house between 40% and 60%.

2. Use air conditioner or a dehumidifier during humid months.

3. Be sure the home has adequate ventilation, including exhaust fans in kitchen and bathrooms.

4. Use mold inhibitors which can be added to paints.

5. Clean bathroom with mold-killing products.

6. Do not carpet bathrooms.

7. Remove and replace flooded carpets.

Toxic mold spores can become airborne during the cleaning. Before cleanup begins, the affected area should be contained and HVAC systems should be shut down to prevent the spores from spreading.

Each area affected by mold should be separately contained. Use plastic sheeting and duct tape to seal doorways, vents, and other openings.

Where possible, place an exhaust fan in a window that is open to the outdoors to direct air flow and mold spores outside.

To limit health risks and reduce the spread of mold spores ensure dust levels are kept to a minimum. Air purifiers and /or Ionizers can be used to minimize airborne particulate.

On weight and beauty

Beauty is what most, if not all, people want to have. In fact, billions of dollars are spent every year just to attain the elusive dream of physical perfection. Surgical procedures have been designed to improve and alter the nose, chin, mouth, and even the entire face and body of a person who would be willing to spend for it. Of course, not everyone can afford these highly expensive medical procedures.

Manufacturers of beauty products offer a cheaper alternative through the various brands and concoctions they feed to a large market. Beauty soaps, astringents, lotions and a host of other beauty products are packaged and sold to an eager army of customers. These products all “promise” to make a woman's skin more soft, smooth, and silky.

These products are not only limited to toiletries and tabletop skin cleansing preparations. It extends to a wide range of pharmaceutical items as well. Some of these pharmaceutical products include acne pills, growth pills, and slimming pills.

While it is true that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” --- society has already set some standards on what constitutes beauty. People have differences in terms of what is beautiful in terms of skin, hair color, shape of the eyes, or the fullness of one's lips. Still, most people agree on one thing: the shape of a woman's body. For this reason, weight loss pills are among the most bought beauty products in the market.

Weight loss pills contain different chemicals and ingredients that either reduce a person's appetite or prevent the absorption of fat in the body. For example, ephedra is still being used as an ingredient in some weight loss pills. Ephedra is a botanical product widely used to enhance alertness and as a weight loss aid. It is actually a low stalky shrub with jointed green to brown stems and tiny unnoticeable leaves. It is the source of ephedrine alkaloids and has a long history of medical use in China. Reported adverse effects led the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ban ephedra-containing products in the United States in 2004, although it can still be legally sold as tea. Despite the ban, many ephedra products are still being sold over the Internet. The main slimming effect ephedra is appetite reduction. Possible side effects of long-term ephedra use include high blood pressure, heart rate irregularities, sleeplessness, seizures, heart attacks, strokes, and even death. Other weight loss pills uses different kinds of chemical contents. Some dietary pills block the absorption of dietary fat, which is relatively safe, but can cause constipation, bloating and other stomach ailments. Other weight loss pills reduce body fat and builds up muscles. These products are relatively safe.

Green tea extract is also used for slimming purposes. The extract increases calorie and fat metabolism and decreases appetite, although there is limited evidence to support the claim. However, long term use of green tea extract can cause vomiting, bloating, indigestion, and diarrhea.

With all these weight loss pills easily available on the market, one can easily think of a “dieter's dream” where every single fat-burning product is within reach. Dietary supplements and weight loss aids are not subject to the same rigorous standards applied in the regulation of prescription drugs or medications sold over-the-counter. Thus, they can be marketed with limited proof of effectiveness and safety. Vendors can make health claims about products based on their own review and interpretation of the studies without the authorization of the FDA, however the FDA can pull a product off the market if its proven dangerous.

A persons scrutiny and curiosity would be their best protection. Reading labels and consulting doctors or pharmacists about the dietary supplement they are taking or considering taking is advised.

Electric scooter

How Can You Benefit From An Electric Scooter?

Almost anybody can benefit from owning an electric scooter. Aside from the convenience of just plugging the unit to an electrical outlet to make it work, you no longer need to spend so much on gas, especially at a time that world oil prices are continuing to skyrocket.

Scooters are very easy to use. Apart from being relatively cheap compared to cars, they also get you to your destination faster. It's small size will enable any rider to maneuver through even the heaviest of traffic jams. And with its varying speed selections, thrill seekers see it as a vehicle of choice.

While electric scooters are still expensive in the long run, as they will still eat up your electricity consumption, it affords the owner convenience. And for most people, this convenience is worth the electric bill increase.

Because electric scooters and any other type of scooter for that matter are also not contrived, people who love the open will get a kick out of it. It will not protect you from the rain, however, but some people do find romance in bathing in the rain while rushing through the streets on a scooter. But, of course, that's very subjective.

Even the elderly and the handicapped can benefit from owning an electric scooter. If they found it difficult to get from one place to another before, they can do so easily if they are on an electric scooter. It's not advisable to use an electric scooter on long trips, though, but if you just want to get to the nearby park or the local grocery store, you won't have any trouble.

Another benefit of electric scooters is that they are portable. So even if you travel far, you can still bring it along. Some e-scooters are foldable so they're very convenient to pack.

This mobile lifestyle is a must have for senior citizens and the handicapped, and, basically, just about anyone who wants to get around town without having to walk. And with the technology covering electric scooters continuing to advance, it won't be a surprise if we will see better and a lot cheaper versions as the demand rises in the coming years.

Scooters are fun to use. And with an electric scooter, no longer will you need to fuss over gas prices. Wherever there is an outlet, you can easily recharge and be on the go again.

It was lights out at the old ballgame

Someone yelling, “Let’s play ball,” officially announces spring. Springtime and baseball seem to go together, as if God created springtime just for the national pastime.

Something about that first baseball game seems to shake away all the gloomy aspects of the past winter. As soon as Old Man Winter strikes out for the last time, good old springtime steps up to the plate and a new game is afoot.

Of course, baseball is for the young. One downside of growing older is the fact that you grow out of certain things. For example, as you grow older you grow out of wearing short pants.

You can tell an old man is trying to act young when he puts away long pants and dons short pants. Somebody needs to tell these men that knobby knees are not in fashion this year and the less seen the better, I assure you.

As you grow older, you also grow out of a lot of free time. There is nothing like trying to make a living to put a crimp in your lifestyle. Once a man puts on his hat, grabs a lunchbox and walks out the door, he is in for a lifetime of work. Free time as he once knew it now has a price tag.

One final thought about growing older — as you grow older you also grow out of extra cash jingling in your pocket. No matter how much a person makes, there seems to be more outgo than income in the average home today.

I remember getting a raise once and when the first paycheck came, my take-home was less than before the raise. My raise put me in a higher tax bracket and hence a lower income each payday.

Only one thing I know that can put a temporary pause in all this nonsense — simply an afternoon at the ballpark. Nothing like a good old ballgame to take away all the anxiety of trying to make a living. When I was younger, I was out in the field, playing ball. But I have outgrown that part of my life and find myself sitting in the stands, cheering on my favorite team.

One of the benefits of becoming a grandfather is attending your grandchildren’s ballgames. Now that my knees creak and my pitching elbow don’t work like it used to, I’m way out of shape to play even one inning of a ballgame. Baseball demands younger knees and elbows that are more pliable. Fortunately for grandfathers, God has bestowed upon them grandchildren who play baseball.

Several weeks ago, it was my privilege to watch my granddaughter play her first softball game. With a good hot cup of coffee and a seat where I could survey the whole process, I settled down to watch a relaxed softball game.

Then, the game took on a new status. My granddaughter came up to bat and I was on the edge of my seat. At that point, the whole game changed for me. Sitting next to me, a man began yelling at the pitcher. “Go ahead, pitcher,” he screamed, “burn one across the plate, the batter’s a bum, she can’t hit nothing.”

I had been away so long from a good ballgame I completely forgot about this element of the game. I demurely turned to the gentleman next to me and opined, “You shouldn’t yell at the kiddies that way. They’re just having fun.”

Without even looking at me, he shot, “Mind your own business, Buster.”

I’m not easily roused, but this man, what should I say, irritated me. Yes, that’s the word, “irritated.”

Then, still not looking at me, he snipped, “The pitcher’s my daughter.”

With all the dignity I could muster under the circumstances I retorted with, “But the batter is my granddaughter. And granddaughters out - rank daughters every time.”

I noticed the information stunned him a little. Old Bubba was trying to process this and I could see he was having a little bit of trouble. I didn’t mind because for a moment he couldn’t think of anything to say, which is good no matter which side you’re cheering for.

At this point, the situation turned ugly. And when I say ugly, I mean Mrs. Bubba inserted herself into the tкte-а-tкte. Let me say, I was not afraid of good old Bubba; it was Mrs. Bubba who put the fear of God into me at the time.

This only illustrates the vast difference between men and women. Men can have a loud, obnoxious, chest puffing argument and then when it’s all over, go and buy each other a cup of coffee and slap each other on the back celebrating the winning team.

Women are not like that; at least Mrs. Bubba was not like that. As best I recollect the situation, Mrs. Bubba, who was sitting on the other side of Bubba, leaned forward and simply said, “Oh yeah?”

It was not what she said, or even how she said it that bothered me. The last thing I remember was her left hook interfacing with my left eye.

Driving home, I mused on what the Apostle Paul wrote. “I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality. Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men’s sins: keep thyself pure.” (1 Timothy 5:21-22 KJV.)

Sometimes, one strike and you’re out.

Self insure yourself and save money

The reason we purchase insurance is to protect the valuable things in our homes in case an unforeseen disaster occurs. Some people may not take as much time as they should when thinking about purchasing insurance on their homes or cars. They might just go ahead and get it without much knowledge or thought. This is a big decision so you should put some thought and effort into this.

One of the ways that can save you a lot of money is if you buy self insurance. If you familiarize yourself a little bit about insurance you will be able to do this yourself. The basic idea of self insurance is using deductible options and eliminating unnecessary coverage. A higher deductible saves you money in your premium. That’s why we call this self insurance. You are taken on a risk when you change your deductible from $100 to $500; it creates a risk of $500 of physical damage. This can also be done on you homeowner insurance policy. When you do that you will lower the premium that you pay and be covered for any major losses.

This will save you a lot of money in the long run. Keeping your deductibles $500 or higher will save you a lot of premium dollars. Also, there are options that you can eliminate from your auto and homeowners insurance to save you money. Some times rental reimbursements and towing benefits are added to the auto insurance. If you self - insure for these items you can save premium dollars too.

If you grasp the whole self insuring concept you can save yourself a lot of money and it will be a lot easier to purchase insurance. So go out and learn about self insuring or ask your local insurance agent. You too can save yourself bundles of money.

Baby shower

Tips For Planning Great Baby Showers

Baby showers are parties thrown for friends that are pregnant. This practice has significantly changed over the course of the years and has gradually become more and more elaborate and planned.

Baby showers can make an expectant mother feel more secure in the fact that her friends are all pulling for her and giving moral and financial support. Usually the baby shower is organized by non-relatives. But today, there is isn’t abnormal to find family members, support group members, church friends and pretty much anyone except the expecting mother.

Inviting the Guests

Who should you invite? Usually, the guest list will only include those nearest and dearest to the expectant mother. It wouldn’t hurt if she gets a first look at the guest list so that she can suggest who should be invited. If you are planning a surprise baby shower, you will have to do a little research on who should be attending instead of running the list through the expectant mother.

If the child is not a firstborn, you may opt to keep the number of guests down to the closest to the mother. Firstborn baby showers tend to have a larger guest list since it is, after all, the mother’s first time.

The thing to remember is that the nature of baby showers is intimacy. So, for any baby shower party, try making the gathering one of intimate friends.

You could use informal ways to invite these guests: email, phone and others. Invitation cards and other letters are the best way, however, as they provide a tangible, traceable evidence of invitation. Plus, it is the most sure and formal way to invite a person – and in many cultures – the only way.

What About the Guys

The nature of the party is probably going to tend towards the feminine side; if the organizers of the party have a provision for this, then inviting men would be fine. It also depends on the men, since the party may dwell on topics such as pregnancy, children, and other motherly topics, they might not be that excited to join. All in all, it depends on the preference of the organizers.

Venue

Anywhere! As long as it can keep with the placid and fun nature of the occasion, any place would be fine. The more usual places on baby shower lists are backyards, formal halls, restaurants, and basically any room that has the amenities to make a baby shower successful. Just make sure the venue is not crowded and stressful to the mother-to-be. It also pays to make sure the venue is set long before the actual baby shower happens.

When to Throw a Baby Shower

Usually this is one or two months before her due. The baby shower is the perfect time to get your friend baby needs and stuff she may not have had time to purchase yet. It has to be well-timed though – not too close to the due date, and not to far as to whittle down the excitement.

Baby showers are a pleasant surprise to expecting mothers. It takes a lot of the stress of expecting a child off of their minds and provides a means for friends to show support and concern (and of course, baby gifts) to expecting friends.

A properly coordinated baby shower will be greatly appreciated and forever remembered by mothers long after they have delivered their children.
